What is a necessary property of the electrolyte

In electrolytic refining of metals, the electrolyte plays a very important role.

• The electrolyte must contain free ions so that electric current can pass through it.

• Therefore, it is usually an aqueous solution or molten form of the metal salt of the same metal being refined.

• These metal ions move in the solution and get deposited as pure metal on the cathode.

Example:
During refining of copper:

• Electrolyte → acidified copper sulphate solution $(CuSO_4)$

• Pure copper deposits on the cathode.

विद्युत अपघटन द्वारा धातु शोधन (Electrolytic Refining) में विद्युत अपघट्य (Electrolyte) बहुत महत्वपूर्ण होता है।

• विद्युत धारा प्रवाहित होने के लिए इसमें मुक्त आयन होने आवश्यक हैं।

• इसलिए यह सामान्यतः उसी धातु के लवण का जलीय घोल या पिघली हुई अवस्था में होता है।

• धातु के आयन घोल में चलकर कैथोड पर शुद्ध धातु के रूप में जम जाते हैं।

उदाहरण:
तांबे के शोधन में —

• विद्युत अपघट्य → अम्लीय कॉपर सल्फेट घोल $(CuSO_4)$

• कैथोड पर शुद्ध तांबा जमा होता है।

👉 इसलिए विद्युत अपघट्य का आवश्यक गुण है कि वह उपयुक्त धातु लवण का घोल हो।
