Basic golden rules of English grammar:
- Subject-Verb Agreement: The subject and verb in a sentence must agree in number. For singular subjects, use singular verbs; for plural subjects, use plural verbs.Example:
- She is going to the store. (singular subject “She” requires the singular verb “is”)
- They are going to the store. (plural subject “They” requires the plural verb “are”)
- Punctuation: Proper punctuation helps clarify meaning and structure in sentences. Know when to use periods, commas, semicolons, colons, exclamation points, and question marks.
- Use of Articles: Choose the correct article (a, an, the) based on whether the noun is specific or general.Example:
- A cat (general)
- The cat (specific)
- Capitalization: Capitalize the first word in a sentence, proper nouns (names of people, places, and things), and titles.
- Sentence Structure: Construct sentences with clear subjects, verbs, and objects. Avoid sentence fragments and run-on sentences.
- Tense Consistency: Maintain consistent verb tense within a sentence and paragraph unless there’s a clear reason to shift.
- Use of Pronouns: Ensure pronouns agree in number and gender with their antecedents.Example:
- He loves his car. (singular pronoun “he” matches singular antecedent “car”)
- They love their cars. (plural pronoun “they” matches plural antecedent “cars”)
- Parallelism: When listing items or actions, maintain parallel structure.Example:
- She likes to hike, to swim, and to cycle. (all infinitives in parallel)
- Modifiers: Place modifiers (adjectives and adverbs) as close as possible to the words they modify to avoid confusion.
- Double Negatives: Avoid using double negatives, as they can create confusion and ambiguity.
