Order and Ranking Questions, Formula, Tricks, Notes PDF

Order and Ranking Reasoning Concept, Formula, Tricks, Questions with solution, Practice Set and notes PDF in Hindi and English for SSC CGL, CPO, CHSL, RRB, Bank and Govt Job competitive exams.

In such type of questions, some person, place or items are ordered on the basis of certain parameters. For Example:-

  • Standing order of Student,
  • Marks obtained by students
  • Height/ weight/ Age order etc.

Type 1 : Position of one person from Both end

Formula: The position of one person is L from Left side and R from Right side. To find the Total Number of person (T)

T = L + R – 1

T = Total Number
L = Position from Left/ Front/ Upside/ Top
R= Position from Right/ Back/ Down/ Bottom

Trick : Consider the mouth of persons toward North, In such condition his Left and your Left will be same.

Example 1: Mohan Position is 12 from Left and 15 from Right side in a queue of students. find the total number of Students.

Solution: T = L + R -1 = 12 + 15 -1 = 26
Total students are 26

Example 2: In a Queue of 50 Student, Rajesh position is 15 from Right side. Find his position from Left side.

Solution: T = L + R -1
50 = L + 15 – 1, L = 36
Total students are 36

Order and Ranking Questions

Type 2 : Interchange the position by Two person

In such type of questions, position of two person from Left and Right end will be given and they will interchange their position. After that position of one person from any end will be given.

2.1: Find the number of person in Such condition.

Total = New Position of One Person + Previous Position of another -1

Example 1: In a queue of students, Mohan Position is 11 from Left and Rajiv is 15 from Right side. Both have interchange their position. After that, Mohan position is 17 from Left. find the total number of Students.

Solution : From the above formula, T = 17 + 15 -1 =31

2.2 Find the new position of another person

The Increase/ decrease in one position, will be added or subtracted from another position.

Example : In a queue of students, Mohan Position is 11 from Left and Rajiv is 15 from Right side. Both have interchange their position. After that, Mohan position is 17 from Left. Find the new position of Rajiv.

Mohan Position Increases from Left from 11 to 17 = 6 position
Accordingly, Rajiv position from right side will increases by 6 position.
15 + 6 = 21

Find the Number of person Sitting in between them

Number of person sitting in between = Difference in the Position of One Person – 1

Example : In a queue of students, Mohan Position is 11 from Left and Rajiv is 15 from Right side. Both have interchange their position. After that, Mohan position is 17 from Left. Find the number of students in between them.

Solution : Change in Mohan Position 17-11 = 6
Number of Students in between them = 6-1 = 5

Type 3 : Find Maximum and Minimum members

Maximum Number = Position of one from left side + Number of person in middle+ Position of second person from right

Minimum Number =Position of one from left side – Number of person in middle+ Position of second person from right -2

Example: In a queue of students, Ramesh Position is 20 th from right and Sohan is 15 th from left side. Two students are in between them. Find the minimum and maximum number of students in queue.

Maximum Students = 20 + 15 + 2 = 37
Minimum Students = 20 +15 -2 -2 = 31

Extra Questions : Order and Ranking Reasoning

Q.1: In a class of 35 students, Vishal is in 7 th position from the last. Rinki is at 9 th place from the above. Satish is exactly in between them. Find the position of Vishal from the Satish.

Number of students in between them = 35 – (9+7) = 19
Middle Position 10 th position.
Therefore, Vishal is in 10 th position from the Satish.

Q.2: In the list of Pass students. karan is in 14 th position from top and 27 th position from the bottom. 6 students have been failed. How many students were appeared in the exam.

Total Pass Students = 14 + 27 – 1 = 40
Failed Students = 6
Total Students = 40 + 6 = 46
