The marked price of  an article is Rs 550. It is sold for Rs 317.90, after giving three successive discounts of 15%, x% and 20% on its marked  price. If it is sold by giving a single discount of 2x%, then its selling price (in Rs) will be :

Options
a) 340
b) 385
c) 495
d) 484

Solution

As per question
Marked Price = 550
1st successive discounts = 15 %
2nd successive discounts = x%
3rd successive discounts = 20%
Single discount = 2x%
SP = MP \times \frac {100 - discount}{100}
317.9 = 550 \times \frac {100 - 15}{100} \times \frac {100 - x}{100} \times \frac{100 - 20}{100}
317.9 = 550 \times \frac {85}{100} \times \frac {100 - x}{100} \times \frac{80}{100}
\frac{317.9}{550} = 17 \times \frac {100 - x}{100} \times 25
\frac{317.9}{550} = \frac{1700 - 17x}{2500}
794750 = 935000 – 9350x
9350x = 140250
x = 15

Single discount = 2x%
Single discount = 2 x 15 = 30%
CP = 550 Rs.
SP = CP – 30% x 550
SP = 550 -\frac {30}{100} \times 550
SP = 550 – 165
SP = 385 Rs.
