Pipe and Cistern- Quantitative Aptitude

Pipe and Cistern topic questions are part of quantitative aptitude tests for competitive exams. It deals with the calculation of the time taken to fill or empty a tank or cistern when different pipes are used.

  1. Filling Rates: When pipes are used to fill a cistern or tank, each pipe has its own rate of filling.
  2. Emptying Rates: Similarly, pipes can also be used to empty a filled cistern or tank.
  3. Combined Rate: When multiple pipes are used simultaneously, either for filling or emptying, their rates can be added together if they work in the same direction (either all filling or all emptying). If they work in opposite directions (some filling, some emptying), their rates are subtracted.
  4. Time Calculation: Using the combined rate, one can calculate the time taken to fill or empty the cistern or tank.
